Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Information for caregivers and health care personnel managing children with renal diseases

Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which chiefly affects the respiratory tract. The virus can also affect other organs such as the kidneys, heart, intestines, blood and nervous system. The disease has spread globally since identification of the first case in December 2019. The World Health Organization (WHO) named the illness as corona virus
disease 2019 (COVID-19) and declared it as a public health emergency and later a pandemic. The disease is contagious with human-to-human transmission via droplets from coughing, sneezing or direct contact. Transmission through feces has also been reported. While COVID-19 has an incubation period of 14 (usually 3-7) days, infection maybe transmitted even during this period. COVID-19 is a flu-like illness, which in a proportion may progress to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and complicated by sepsis, septic shock and multi organ failure.
